At one time in history, the Chesapeake Bay's bounty and pristine beauty were self-sustaining. Today, however, the ecology of the Bay is fragile. The Chesapeake Bay is often portrayed in terms of beautiful postcard seascapes, the degradation of its health, or the uncertainty of its future. But behind these depictions are the concerted and largely unheralded efforts of many individuals, some of high-profile, most not--each doing their small yet vital part to restore the future of the watershed. In "Multiply by 15 Million," the December 28, 2001 edition of his On the Bay column in The Baltimore Sun, Tom Horton wrote, "Although pollution moving downstream is inevitable, reducing our impact is not. This has to be taught, mandated, encouraged. Toward this end, the Dorbins' book is nothing short of inspirational."
